"Place the cover on top of the ark and put in the ark the Testimony, which I will give you…There, …, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites." (Ex 25:21-22)

Mercy seat (atonement cover) is the holy seat of God. In the Ark are the Ten Commandments and the Lord's laws. Without the cover, each of us has to undergo the fair judgment from God. When we're faced with the righteous judgment, no one can stand still.

So the mercy seat is important and can't be taken away. In addition, where there is God's righteousness, there must be His mercy. I believe His grace is always sufficient for us, for His power is made perfect in our weakness.
