The LORD struck the Israelites with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made. Moses stood in the gap for those worshipping the molten image and even for Aaron. God would have destroyed them all.

Moses earnestly pleased the Lord for the salvation and pardon of those people, which let us know about the conditional eternal security that a person can fall from grace.
