上帝要以色列民遵守律例典章， 過「分別為聖」的生活，才能歸耶和華為聖。
利未記20章的主題，乃是針對倫理生活不聖潔，招致的「刑罰」。「刑罰」是父親愛兒子，為達成管教目的，而不得不採取的途徑（來12：5-11）。「刑罰」是要使上帝的選民保持聖潔身份，與迦南人的生活中分別出來；「刑罰」是要使上帝的選民受警惕，勿玷迦南人習俗的罪污。所以，上帝的管教，要使我們得益處，在祂的聖潔上有分。

The Lord our God has separated the Israelites from other peoples, so they are not allowed to follow the aliens' customs. This might arouse the Lord anger and He even would vomit them out from the land where He brings them to dwell. We should be reminded not to take what the Lord gives us for granted and never go astray from the road He has paved for us.
