It means that we must forget old ourselves and re-start our life through this cross.

馬可福音 8:34 於是叫眾人和門徒來，對他們說：「若有人要跟從我，就當捨己，背起他的十字架來跟從我」。同樣地，加拉太書 6:14 也告訴我們：「但我斷不以別的誇口，只誇我們主耶穌基督的十字架；因這十字架，就我而論，世界已經釘在十字架上；就世界而論，我已經釘在十字架上」。這個「十字架」（原文σταυρός ；To bear the cross）的意思。在羅馬時代，將奴隸和罪犯的雙手和雙腳用鐵釘，釘在「十字架」上，讓後將「十字架」豎立起來，把整個身子的重量掛在兩隻手腕和雙腳心與兩根垂直的木頭上，這個被釘的人，慢慢地流血，直到雙腳無法撐起全身的重量，掛在「十字架」而死。這是最可怕的和痛苦折磨。
這個「十字架」在此是指接受那因拒絕世界上的事所帶來的結果，進而轉向耶穌基督，跟從祂作主的門徒。（to accept the rejection of the world for turning to Jesus and following him）. 跟從祂作主的門徒是要「捨己」，要付代價的，有可能為主捨命就像主被釘在十字架上。
對我的提醒：就像約翰一書 2:16～17 節所說的：「因為凡世界上的事，就像肉體的情慾，眼目的情慾，並今生的驕傲，都不是從父來的，乃是從世界來的。這世界和其上的情慾都要過去，惟獨遵行神旨意的，是永遠常存」。作個得救的基督徒，從受洗重生後，要學基督有新生的樣式，必須先從「捨己」做起，背起「十字架」，跟從祂作主的門徒。這個「捨己」，就是把「老我」釘在十字架上死了，除去「凡世界上的事，就像肉體的情慾，眼目的情慾，並今生的驕傲」，全部與主的身體/死一起釘在十字架上，與主同埋葬，藉著洗禮與主同復活，活出新的生命。說實在的，作個真正的基督徒，是要付代價的；它和學問，學位，名利，地位，聖經知識多寡無關，我們若「真正相信」聖經的教導，上帝的話，我們就願意像馬太福音 6:33 所說的：「你們要先求他的國和他的義，這些東西都要加給你們了」； 不再看重世界的事，願意「捨己」，背起「十字架」，跟從主作祂的門徒，在生活中經歷上帝，榮耀祂的名。

The disciples of the Jesus are often treated with indifference or contempt. The cross to me is to let people around me know the essence of the gospel. I dare not say I am capable of taking it up but would remind myself to be a living testimony to the best of my ability. In this adulterous and sinful generation, Christians should not act in a way against the Lord but instead try every means to glorify Him.

Jesus wants to teach His disciples through this parable what is within counts more than what is outside of a body. He cares about whether one's heart is close to or far away from Him. Besides, what can defiles a person is not the germs or bacteria but the evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. Therefore, hypocrites are the ones whom the Lord despises.
