I was very happy that JBC reminded all of us to keep a self critical attitude while reading the Bible.
We would be easily falling into the trap of Pharisaism of checking out bones from the chicken egg with an indignation of self righteousness.

Concerning Jabesh-Gilead, we had very few informations in the Bible, you might want to check the following webpage for these scanty informations.

We observed from this section that the eleven tribes were very impulsive and aggresive in their deal against the tribe of Benjamin. Though they regretted after almost eliminate the whole Benjamin tribe except for the megar 600 left over. Then they resolve to very cruel method to help the 600 left over getting their wives in order to preserve the tribe. So during that period of time, people were very impulsive and selfish. Do you think that we would do better now?

It was very interesting reading all of your comments and responses concerning the comparison between Reuben and Judah.
We got scanty information in the Bible concerning the inner motivation of their actions, so we could only speculate with humility.
Though Judah seemed to be more covetous than Reuben, but God decided to choose the tribe of Judah as the origin of the Messiah, rather than the tribe of Reuben.

God was very creative and patient. He used various approaches to teach Israelites life lessons that he would like them to learn.

Sometimes we just could not understand the reason why God allowed such astrocities to happen in history or in our lives.
This was a tragedy in Israel history that eleven tribes had to resolve to use such extreme means to solve the issue against another tribe. Bible just recorded this tragedy for us to read. Personally I would treat this section of story as descriptive, rather than prescriptive.

Bethel was a special place for Jacob. In his life history, Bethel would remind him of the mercy and faithfulness of God, in spite of his wrongness and fear.
