We were chosen not because we were more in number but it is because the Lord loves us, and is keeping the oath which He swore to our fathers. If we hearken to the ordinances, and keep and do them, God will keep with us the covenant and the steadfast love which He swore to our fathers to keep. Therefore, the salvation is out of love and we have to be appreciative of this, instead of coveting the silver or the gold not belonging to us or the graven images of false gods.

「耶和華你神所要交給你的一切人民，你要將他們除滅，你眼不可顧惜他們…。 」似乎神的命令是滅絕，我們就當遵行。但是，創世記18:16-33中，當神是滅罪惡之城所多瑪時，亞伯拉罕也為所多瑪向神請命。最後神承諾城中若可找到十個義人，就不滅那城，但卻是連十個也沒有。如此看來，似乎神稱許亞伯拉罕有憐憫的心腸，同時也顯現出神是憐憫的神(所以願意放下身段接與正亞伯拉罕之間的討價還價)，也是公義的神(作惡的需要付出罪的代價)，斷不會以有罪的為無罪，更不會以無罪的為有罪，而無故取人性命。以此再看申命記摩西對以色列人所說的，「你要將他們除滅，你眼不可顧惜他們。」想必不只是因為上帝要把這地給以色列人，而是另有其他的因素，神要以色列人滅絕這地的人。
