Jephthah seemed to be a tragedy hero in the Bible. He was illegal child of his father with a prostitude. He was expelled by his half brothers to be a homeless fugutives. Then at the crisis of the Israelite, he responded to the summon to take risk in fighting against their enemies. He seemed not having been taught about how to swear to the Lord. Thus he made a very rash and harsh vow to Yahweh before going to the war. Then the greatest tragedy of his life befell upon him. After that tragedy, he even had to face the challenge of the tribe of Ephraimites with violent fighting.
The Bible was also silent on the spiritual lessons for us to learn from this incidence. Was this just descriptional historical story, or what was the spiritual lessons for us to learn? When Abraham responded to Yahweh's challenge to offer up his only son Isaac, the angel from the Lord intervened at the last minute to spare Isaac from being burned up as human sacrifice. But for Jephthah, the Bible was silent. There were all kinds of speculations upon the actual fate of his daughter. Some scholars would speculate that Jephthah's daughter just keep her virginity all her life without being married. Some would say that she was actually burned up as a holocost burnt offering after spending two months to cry for her untimely and premature death...

This was a very interesting short parable pair. For me, Jesus used two different but related parables to express the incompatibility between the old tranditional system and the new innovation invention. The old system losted its flexibility and adaptability, while the new invention was full of vigor and energy. In the first parable, the contracting power of the new cloth would pull and tear the old clothes and aggravate the hole of the old system, but the new cloth would be still intact. In the second parable, the fermenting power of the new wine would burst open the old wineskin. But this time both the old wineskin and the new wine would suffer damage and loss at the bursting...
What Jesus advised was to store the new wine into the new wine skin, so as to preserve both. It seemed to be more revolutinary than renewal to me.
Personally, I got some other personal thoughts on these two parables. If you could dip the new cloth into the water to shrink it before mending it onto the hole of the old clothes, then it might help mending the old clothes without causing more damage. If you dip the old wineskin into water to make it more pliable and soft, then when you pour the new wine into that dipped old wineskin, the old wineskin might be able to hold up the new wine without bursting apart. Just some personal thoughts to share with you.....

Very interesting to read all of your sharings. It was very clear that each one of us would come up with different readings, understandings, and explanations on the same paragraph of the Bible.
Personally, I could sense that Jacob got the same calculating and manipulating capabilities from his mother, who might got the same capabilities from her father, while her brother Laban, and uncle of Jacob also got it. But it seemed that Jacob got an upper hand over his uncle.
I was not sure whether this was from DNA inheritance or from the family rearing up, the so called nature vs. nurture debate. I was also not sure whether the scripture just kept this historical incidence for descriptive purpose, or there were some prescriptive spiritual lessons we could learn from this incidence...

看到 Kathleen 同學的心得後，不免讓我自己覺得有點慚愧，自己明白了這樣的信息，那是要把我從世俗罪惡中拯救出來的好消息，但是現實和理想總有爭戰，我每天還是抱著許多憂慮，公司能不能撐過今年的虧損？明天會不會又跌停板？組織重整後會不會調降職務？公司要求主管找出考績最差的員工請他走路，我能當著他的面告訴他嗎？
最近常思考著主為我開的路是哪一條路？我的生活，我的工作，我的家庭是不是往這條路上走？祂說︰『疲乏的，祂賜能力；軟弱的，祂賜力量。』但願主能不斷給我憐憫，給我同在的智慧，給我路上的光，給我腳前的燈，當我接受您作為我一生的主，您也必用膀臂聚集羔羊抱在懷中，慢慢地引導我。

雅各說『我的道路向耶和華隱藏。』、以色列說『我的冤屈神並不查明。』可見他們已忘記神是全能的神，是創造一切的神，是掌管一切的神…。所以以賽亞再次陳述神的大能(賽40:12-26)，讓以列人知道神的拯救必會臨到。而且他還對以色列人說「永在的神耶和華，創造地極的主，不疲乏、不困倦。智慧無法測度。」不只祂是這樣的神，連那等候耶和華的，祂也賜能力。讓他行走、奔跑，不疲乏、不困倦。
是啊！這真是大好的信息～～
主啊！我是少年人，但我疲乏困倦～～
主啊！我是強壯人，但我卻絆倒在地～～
主啊！有人靠車、有人靠馬，願我倚靠的是萬軍耶和華，願我是那等候祢的人，專心等候祢。經歷祢使我從新得力，如鷹展翅上騰。

約伯描述著尊榮福祿離自己遠去，神的大能追逼著他，他不在人中尋求答案，他呼求神，但神卻不應允他。
他說『然而人仆倒，豈不伸手？遇災難，豈不求救？』人尚且如何，何況樂於賜福的神，豈會忍心看人受無妄之苦。
他說『我仰望得好處，災禍就到了，我等待光明，黑暗便來了。』他不明白，為什麼是這樣。真實的人生，有時不也是這樣嗎？我們仰望困難被解決，但是好像愈禱告，處境愈難。
是啊！這一切若非神許可，是不會發生的。
