God sent an angel to prepare a way for the Israelites. The angel is very likely to be God Himself. Yet He wanted them to be patient because He wished them to be with Him all the time, stick to the last minute, and the prosperity would come.
"But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you." (Ex 23:29)

In addition, God assigned an important task for the Israelites. They were required to demolish the gods of the Canaanites and broke the sacred stones to pieces. God promised that as long as the Israelites kept worshiping Him, He would give them a full life span.
