Instead of inflicting punishment upon those who used to be ruled under Absalom, David won over the hearts of all the men of Judah through conciliation:
"You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to bring back the king?" (2Sa 19:12)
"Are you not my own flesh and blood?" (2Sa 19:13)

David also humbled himself and rewarded those who chose to be loyal to him. For example, he ordered Mephibosheth and Ziba to divide the fields. (2Sa 19:29)
That's why he could later safely cross over to Gilgal and returned to Jerusalem.

Sword might not be the mightiest weapon. Mercy and tenderness count more.
