After reading this story, it is easy to think that David righted some longstanding wrongs, and then God happily sent rain to the parched land of Israel. But that conclusion might differ if we look into Deuteronomy 7 and see the instruction that God gave to Israel about how to deal with the Gibeonites. God says very clearly that Israel was to conquer them, destroy them, and make no covenant with them.
Joshua 9:14 is the key to Israel's problem. They did not seek God in this matter; they did not inquire. They did not ask, "God, what should we do to these people, the Gibeonites?"
We have to understand that the people of the land like David, a flawed hero, represent the things we need to overcome—our human nature. Satan all the ways tries to manipulate us.
