On the breastpeice, there were four rows of precious stones. In the fourth row, there were a chrysolite, an onyx, and a jasper. Apart from that, there were twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes. (Ex 28: 15-21)
Whenever Aaron entered the Holy place, he would bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece. (Ex 28:29) That might serve as not only a memorial but also a reminder for him as a priest to take full responsibility for Israel. The more delicate the breastpiece was, the more highly God regarded the worship as a weighty matter.
