Though Jehu tried every means to kill Ahab's family, he was not careful to keep the law of the Lord with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit (2Ki 10:31). Jehu's success and failure is a mirror, which shows us what "to be severe with oneself and lenient with others" means.

Jehu might have thought that the golden calves were representative of the Lord Himself, but worshiping an idol is strictly not allowed (Ex 20:3-6). He may have respected the Lord superficially. I should often reflect on my attitude toward the Lord. It is very likely that I do not meet His expectation—serving Him whole-heartedly.
