"The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts"(Pr 18:8). That means if you determine not to gossip about others, you have to closely stick to the principle and even strictly ask yourself not to listen to any gossip.
In addition, listening carefully is an important skill of discerning what is said by others. Distortion can thus be avoided. Knowledge and wisdom prevent one from folly and shame (18: 13, 15, 17).
