Nehemiah found that the Israelites defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. He took the problem seriously and took necessary action such us establishing the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work and providing for the wood offering at appointed times.

He might think that if he could intervene as early as he can, the Israelites' relationship with the Lord would not deteriorate. Therefore, he dealt with the issue of intermarriage in a more violent way than Ezra. He contended with them, cursed them, beat some of them and pulled out their hair, which might serve as a stark warning for those who would likely commit the same sin.
