Though helping the apostles was not Gamaliel's intention, his words indirectly prevented the Sanhedrin from being dissolved. Thus we can learn that even a Pharisee like Gamaliel could have been assigned by the Lord to rescue the apostles. This echoes what Peter said, "We must obey God rather than men" (Ac 5:29) and what Gamaliel put, "…if their purpose or activity is from God, you will not be able to stop these men…" (5:39). The Lord's sovereignty makes everything possible.
