In my view, Sar'ai was too naïve to let Hagar bear children for Abram. Women are jealous creatures. Sar'ai couldn't tolerate the seemingly exalted status of Hagar, and Hagar became proud of her ability to conceive a baby.
What's worse, Abram provoked the conflict between them by allowing Sar'ai to treat Hagar harshly. The three didn't take any advantage from the war.
If they could have let the Lord judge, the matter wouldn't have got so complicated. God intervened finally, asking Hagar to submit to Sar'ai. God gives heed to everyone's affliction. Hagar softened herself so that she could be saved from the perplexed situation.
